I’m starting this thread in order that simple and straightforward information is available to those members who are not familiar with resizing photos/images, a process which is sometimes necessary to comply with WAB’s requirements on image uploading.
I appreciate that several third party (freeware or paid for) image editing software options are available, and that members may have preferences as to which particular software is better than the next.
However, The intent of this thread is to enable members to be able to resize photos using only MS Paint, which is available within every version of the Windows operating system.
With that in mind, I’d appreciate it if anyone making a response in this specific thread would refrain from offering other software manufacturer’s wares as options.
How to easily resize photos using only Microsoft Paint.
(Which comes ready installed with every version of Windows currently available).
NB: Always make a “Save As” copy of your photo before you do any resizing – and only use that specific copy for resizing. That way, you will always retain the original sized version, in case you should ever need it in future.
With Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1:-
Find your chosen photo, and open it within Microsoft Paint on your computer. Then:-
1. On the Home tab, in the Image group, click Resize.
2. In the Resize and Skew dialog box, select the Maintain aspect ratio check box so that the resized picture will have the same aspect ratio as the original.
3. In the Resize area, click Pixels
*, and then enter a new width in the Horizontal box or new height in the Vertical box. Click OK.
If the Maintain aspect ratio check box is selected, you only need to enter the horizontal value (width) or vertical value (height). The other box in the Resize area is updated automatically.
For example, if a picture is 320 x 240 pixels and you want to make it half that size with the same aspect ratio, in the Resize area, with the Maintain aspect ratio check box selected, enter 160 in the Horizontal box. The new picture size will be half the original size at 160 x 120 pixels.
Note –
* As an alternative to specifying the new pixel parameters, you could, instead, click on the percentage button, and then simply specify how big you want the new copy of your photo to be as a percentage of the size of the original photo.
Note also, that resizing is
NOT the same as cropping.
Resizing affects the entire image, and will make the complete image larger or smaller (with associated increases or decreases in file-size).
Cropping is the selection, "cutting out", and saving of a particular section of the original image.
Cropping should be used only when a specific part of the original image is required for subsequent upload. (And even then, depending on the original file-size, the cropped image
may need to be resized, to comply with WAB
Gallery requirements).
