Hello all

Similar to our ‘pick up sticks’ thread it may be useful to have a ‘micro’ fungi thread.

Anything larger than 5mm is probably too big

I’ll start the thread off with a possible Seticyphella tenuispora (awaiting ID from Kew) found at Anston Stones wood on dead leaves. The size is in the region of 0.3mm

Dasyscyphus apalus on Juncus. 0.2 – 0.4 mm

Most of the centres were yellow but this does not show up to well in the photo

The key to understanding fungi is careful observation of macroscopic and microscopic features

A nice image Peter and I can make out the yellow centres clearly on my monitor.

Correct exposure is more critical at this magnification / size and it’s not easy at all sometimes!

The first species (posted on the microscope thread)I found some cow dung. It looked like a small Sarcoscypha

but I soon realized it was a Cheilymenia sp. The star shaped hairs

lead me to C stercorea.

While looking at that a second species was found



Ascobolus with its distinctive spores (shame I couldn’t reproduce the wonderful purple colour)


Finally I spotted the top of what I think is a Podospora sp




which I have sent off for identification.

All of these were around 5mm or less.

In the spirit of this thread, here are some samples of the small stuff from a foray with FungiJohn at Clumber 27 March 2010.

and an unknown. Some of these did excede the 5mm limit, but not this one.

Leave only footprints, take only pictures

not sure if these are actually fungi or not, they are on an old pine cone and are almost invisible to the naked eye, but have a definite cup shape to them on close inspection,
I only spotted them when the pictures came up on the computer screen after taking a few practice shots of the pine cone with my new camera ,
If they are fungi then they certainly fit the "micro" description !
