Hi I looking for a waterproof silent camo jacket and was wondering if anyone have any reccomondations please. I have been looking at the deerhunter montana and the deben hurricane, if anyone knows if these are any good please let me know.

Your garden their refuge, a jig-saw of habitats for wildlife under pressure

For winter I have a Prologic Thermo Armour jacket – camo outer with zip in/out lined black fleece. The camo outer is quite long and covers your bum while the quileted lined black fleece is shorter. Its not totally silent – there is a bit of ‘rustle’ but its not much. I’ve sat out and stood outside for 8 hours at a stretch in winter calm cold weather and stayed warm and dry. Its fishing-tackle gear made by the firm who makes fishing tackle. I like the fact that its long enough – short jackets just make me shiver round my kidneys!

For summer I have their smock – longish again, lightweight, very quiet and quite heavy shower-proof. There are a variety of offers on the web if you look around! I can wear this smock all day, stay comfortable, neither too hot nor cold – there are no zips – no jacket flapping open at the wrong minute and sudden rain doesn’t have me diving into a rucksac looking for waterproofs plus I can ‘scrawm’ and roll about the floor and not worry about a bit of mud!

I also bought their short jacket – described as a fleece – but its more like a lined proper jacket and its for going shopping in – its also camo as are the other two – I don;t care about going round the supermarket in camo – what use would a coloured jacket be to the likes of me who when not shopping spends all their in pursuit of wildlife – a normal jacket just to go shopping in while appearing ‘normal’ actually doesn’t appeal to me even if I could afford a spare coat just for shopping. There’s times when its cool enough in spring and autumn to wear this jacket and be mithered with the zips. But it goes to Asda more than it goes into the countryside!!!

I have a fishing jacket and trousers for winter, but I`m looking for something that is low noise and waterproof for the reat of the year. Something not to expensive that I would not mind getting dirty. I`ve just got a pair of stealth gear trousers, but their jacket is way to much money.

Buying camo gear can be an expensive mistake and it is important to understand what is a must have feature and what is just a gimmick. Mine was about £50 and worth every penny. I have had my coat for about 5 years and it is great, although designed for shooting it has everything i need for wildlife watching. Made by Percussion it has been worn nearly every day winter and summer thrown around, rolled in and scrambled through hedges. It is still perfect, every zip works, every stud is in place and i use all 11 pockets for something. So whats important! most of all silence, you must have soft material to avoid rustle! Next pockets, some for security so require a zip and some to carry so must be big enough to get into with gloves on. Mine has a useful back pocket which carries a kneeling pad. Next you need good cuffs that dont end up up your arms! The collar needs to have a good warm feel and allow you to clip it in place. Dont bother with hoods they are a waste of time and you need a seperate hat! More important for camouflage for the coat are gloves hat and face screen. Even through summer i wouldnt dream of going out without gloves and a face screen and will even use them when using a hide for photography.

Trousers one of my pairs is lined which i regret as they are too warm except in mid winter. I would rather have apair of thermals and an unlined pair of trousers.

My advice is go to a fishing or shooting shop and try them on, you dont need to pay a fortune but if you buy well you wont regret it. try a few out and dont be rushed.
