Information
Description: 

A large fungus with a bright yellow cap and brittle yellow gills, found growing either solitary or in scattered troops on soil, under Birch in damp places.

Distribution: 

Frequent from late Summer till Autumn.

Habitat: 

In damp locations with Birch.

Cap: 

Initially convex, flattening and slightly depressed with age, bright or ochraceous yellow, grey with age, smooth and sticky when moist, sulcate margin in older specimens, cuticle peeling halfway to the centre, cystidia absent.

Flesh: 

Cap flesh is white, granular, moderately thick, soft andslowly  greying where damaged, stem flesh is white, grey with age stuffed and fairly soft. Odour not distinctie, taste mild or fairly hot.

Gills: 

Adnexed or free, forked, fairly crowded, pallid ochraceous, turning grey when damaged.

Stem: 

More or less equal, fairly stout, smooth, reacting as in cap, ring absent.

Additional Notes: 

Occasionally appears in Spring. The flesh turns reddish then grey with FeSO4.
