This fungus can be found growing either singly or in clumps in mixed woodland, parkland and gardens. It can reach large sizes and the cap is white with a dark umbo and recurved brown scales.The gills bruise dark brown but the flesh bruises a deep red colour before turning brown.
Habitat: On soil in woodland, frequently with conifers and less often decdiuous trees. Often abundant in plantations. Reported from grassland but mostly unsubstantiated with voucher material and possibly representing other taxa. Notes: Common and widespread. N.B. The epithet was spelt rachodes in the original diagnosis of this taxon, but this is considered an orthographic error. Vellinga [Mycotaxon 83: 416, 2002] has transferred this species to Chlorophyllum.
