Description: 

The surface of the cap is covered by fibrous, rust brown scales, which is a distinctive feature of this fungi.  When cut, the flesh bruises red, especially in the stem.

Habitat: 

Most commonly found in coniferous woodland with lime rich soil and less frequently in deciduous woodland. 

Cap: 

Can reach a diameter of 15cm but is usually much smaller. Cap surface covered in broad fibrous rust brown scales.

Flesh: 

Flesh is white turning red on cutting or bruising. It has a typical mushroomy smell.

Gills: 

Free, pink at first, turning chocolate brown and then brownish-black with age.

Spores: 

Purple-brown

Stem: 

The stem, which has a pendulous ring, can be large, reaching a height of 12cm.

Additional Notes: 

Considered to be a good edible speimen.
