Description: 

A medium to large Russula that has a variable cap, being violet to buff in colour, growing in scattered groups or solitary, on soil under broadleaf trees.

Distribution: 

Frequent form Summer till Autumn.

Habitat: 

Grows on soil under broadleaf trees.

Cap: 

Initially convex then flattened-convex, later slightly depressed, smooth, violaceous to buff in colour , generally pallid, often with a greenish tinge, cutucle peels halfway to the cap centre, retracting from the margin.

Flesh: 

Cap flesh is white, firm and medium. Stem flesh is firm, brittle, white and stuffed. Odour not distinctive. Taste mild and nutty.

Gills: 

Adnexed, narrow, crowded,  pale cream and forked close to the stem, interveined.

Stem: 

More or less equal, smooth, whitish, occasionally with violaceous tinges, ring absent.

Additional Notes: 

Flesh turns rapidly a deep salmon-pink with FeSO4.
