Description:
A field guide to the grasshoppers and crickets found in Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. The book includes photographs and life histories of all the resident, vagrant and introduced species. There is also a descriptive section covering the species with 'one off' records and those that may appear in these islands in the near future. The photographs include the adults, nymphs and colour forms, accompanied by a description of their identification features and the identifying features of similar species. There is a full colour, 'easy access' photographic key to the adults, for quick and easy identification. The early chapters cover orthopteran biology, habitats, useful equipment and photography. The book is an A5 hardback, has 183 pages and over 580 photographs in full colour, plus distribution maps of the resident species.

Strengths:
Detail of coverage and quality of photographs.
Weaknesses:
Copies of this book are not that easy to get hold of.
I'd be lost without this book to help me identify the grasshoppers and crickets that I find in the field. Grasshoppers in particular are very variable with respect to their colour and markings. The pictures in this book reflect this variability in a series of very clear photographs. The book has a hard back and is extremely durable so can be taken into the field without any problems.
