Strengths:
Unbelievably useful - so accessible and informative
Weaknesses:
None
This is, without doubt, the ultimate field guide to the insects of the British Isles and Europe. It is equally useful to the experienced naturalist and novice alike. So comprehensive: yet it really does fit into a pocket.
The illustrations are crisp, accurate and genuinely helpful. They are also, without exception, stunningly beautiful.
The text includes details of habitat, life-cycle and the time of year the insect is likely to be encountered as well as diagnostic features that aid identification.
As well as detailed descriptions of the adult insects, there are illustrations of larvae. Often differences between sexes are shown or described where there is likely to be confusion.
This is the latest edition of a classic book that was originally published in 1986 by HarperCollins, London. If anything, this is even better than the original as there are more common names included and some errors in the earlier edition have been corrected.
If anyone has any interest in insects whatsoever, this is an absolute must-have. Buy it now!
