Description:
Featuring 1,000 species of higher fungi found in the British Isles and northern Europe, from the most common to the rarest and including some never hitherto published photographically, this is the most comprehensive photographic handbook for the dedicated mycologist, general naturalist or mushroom hunter collecting for the cooking pot. To ensure that the fruiting bodies are shown in their true colours and forms, the superb colour photographs in this encyclopedia have been taken live and in situ in natural light, making it the most thorough and realistic photographic field guide available. Each species is seen as it will be found in the wild, in its typical habitat and on its natural substrate. Detailed mycological descriptions, including essential microscopic characteristics, are given to ensure accurate verification. Each entry further defines a fungus's usual occurrence by season and location, states whether it is edible or poisonous and where relevant indicates its culinary uses. The Encyclopedia includes an introduction to mushroom biology, a guide to the tools and methods of foraging for mushrooms, making it a superb central reference source or a self-contained and comprehensive guide to the practical study and collection of fungi.

Strengths:
Descriptions, photographs taken in situ (my preference) and general information
Weaknesses:
Not qualified to assess.
Bought this book shortly after buying Roger Phillips "Mushroom" and I prefer Jordan's book. Similar information in both but I like the photographs in Jordan's, which are taken where the mushrooms were growing, which I think helps with ID, as one can see what they are growing with and in, but this is just a personal choice and others may prefer ""Phillips". An excellent reference book but far too large to carry around in the field.
