Being part of The North Face top of the range Summit Series, it is specifically designed for alpine mountaineering and beyond. While that may not be appropriate for many people, the side effect of this is that it performs awesomely in the less extreme conditions you typically experience in Britain.
If you are setting off with the ice picks, its not restrictive when using axes, the jacket is quite short and not bulky so sits with the harness easily without causing problems (getting the right size will be important there though), its extremely lightweight, bulletproof in the face of the elements, has a helmet-friendly hood, easily adjustable when wearing gloves, has custom pockets designed for specific purposes and above all else its comfortable and breaths well.
If you just want a jacket to keep you dry on a wet British day then its probably overkill, becuase its short its pretty much necessary to wear waterproof trousers as well in heavy rain, otherwise the legs will get soaked. But if you are in the market for a top of the range jacket, there isnt much better that money can buy.
