Strengths:
Cheapish, lots of species
Weaknesses:
Photographs poor, descriptions don't include behaviour and habitat and detail.
I brought this as my first Field Guide as it was chepert han the alternate in the bookshop (Collins Field Guide to the Insects of Britain and Northern Europe). These two books are by the same author. The second costs £25 but on Amazon is the same price. This one dosn't have the detail and some of the photographs are poor quality, whilst Collins Field Guide to the Insects of Britain and Northern Europe has much better quality illustrations 9the quality of the print and paper makes a lot of difference here), better background and is a hard back. I suggest that you go for Chinary's other book which is worth the extra money and costs the same if you buy from Amazon

Strengths:
Great for the amateur. Helps identify lots of species.
Weaknesses:
Not a lot of information on individual species.
I wanted a book that would help me identify any insects that I found in my garden. This book has been invaluable for me. There is not a lot of information on each species but once I have identified something I can look up more detail elsewhere. The photos are good enough to identify most things.
This book is probably not for you if you are only interested in individual species rather than a wide range of species.
