The Kelly Kettle®, also known as the Volcano Kettle, has been an essential piece of kit for Irish fishermen for generations. Quickly boiling water using virtually any fuel, the Kelly Kettle lets you enjoy a freshly brewed cup of tea or coffee in minutes rather than the stale version you can look forward to from a flask.
But it's not just for fishermen. Anyone interested in camping, treking, mountaineering, kayaking, or any outdoor pursuit, needs to add the Kelly Kettle to his or her rucksack.
A Kelly Kettle will boil water in 3 to 5 minutes depending on the fuel you're using. Made from aluminium it is essentially a double-walled chinmney with the water contained in the chimney wall. Once the kettle is filled with water, simply start a very small fire in the base, set the kettle on the base and drop additional fuel (twigs, leaves, grass, paper, etc.) down the chimney.
The large internal surface area of the chimney heats the water very quickly. When the water boils, hold the Handle at an angle of 90° to the Kettle - then lift the Kettle clear of the base.
To pour, lift it by the handle and tilt it using the cork chain.

Strengths:
renewable fuel , very quick to boil
Weaknesses:
heavy
we have two of these for working parties , they are cracking bits of kit for making a lot of tea , much better than a gas burner and kettle
they can be a bit difficult to get lit but if you already have a fire going dropping in a few embers works a treat.
a bit too heavy for camping trips but the perfect companion to a conservation working party

Strengths:
Will run on natural fuel such as twigs
Weaknesses:
bulky and very messy (If that kind of thing worries you)
Good but very bulky and this for me gets in the way. If you can build a simple fire then a small kettle would be a better option if you want to travel light.
