Image stabilised, sharp, well made
Heavy, colour may be off-putting, PUMP
A while back I was driver to a few photographers covering the L'Eroica cycling race in Tuscany Italy. It is a gruelling race across the strade bianca, or white roads, of the region. As you could imagine the car was getting thrown about but still the photographers were able to get crystal clear shots. I enquired as to how this was possible. Image stabilised lenses. From that moment I was sold.
Prior to doing my dough on this lens I made enquiries with several members on the forum to see what their thoughts were. This lens got a resounding thumbs up and many lovely images are featured in the gallery using this model.
A few members said that the colour can be a downside - a sort of eggshell white, which as you can imagine is not the most discreet of colours. It has yet to have hindered me. However, I have not tried it out in fieldcraft shots.
The lens is quite heavy, and the weight is not insignificant so it should be considered. I use a front rucksack to carry my gear round in so it tends not to bother me but I can imagine that to carry the lens and camera on a normal neck strap could be quite tiring.
The build quality is excellent. Some do not like the PUMP - the lens is extended and contracted by pushing or pulling - as they say it sucks in dirt. I have to say that from those I have spoken to conditions would have to be pretty harsh for that to happen and it does seem very well sealed to me.
I have now used this lens from a moving car, and a boat, and been amazed by the results at the 400 mil end of its range. Even handholding at 400 mil can can be tricky with a standard lens but with this lens it really is a piece of cake. The focusing is super fast and silent and to track moving objects is very easy indeed. I often turn that image stabiliser off to see just how the image turns out without it and it never ceases to amaze me as to how much difference it makes.

My lens arrived this week and I am at present assessing it. It appears to be very well constructed and once the action of hanging a camera body onto the back of a lens instead of hanging a lens onto the front of a camera has been conquered this lens becomes a positive asset.
The 'push pull' pump action has not caused any difficulties; neither has the weight of the lens. I am used to handling 48" lenses and 1000' x 10" wide rolls of film, so this lens is only a tiddler really. I suppose it is all relative.
The photographs which I have taken with it to date, are all pin sharp. The big test will come in 2007 when I use the lens whilst on safari in South Africa.
