6.0 Megapixels
A 6.0 Megapixel CCD allows for superb quality photo prints with razor-sharp definition. It provides more than enough detail for printing cropped images.
6x optical zoom
The PowerShot A700 packs a powerful 6x optical zoom lens into a remarkably compact space. A real-image optical viewfinder helps with quick composition and framing accuracy.
Visionary Technology
Canon's DIGIC II image processor links all camera functions and processes images at high speed for excellent responsiveness and extended battery life. iSAPS technology uses scene information to optimise camera settings before the shot is taken.
Flexible focusing
Rely on 9-point AiAF to keep even off-centre subjects sharply in focus, or use FlexiZone AF/AE to manually select focus points.
Shooting modes and My Colors
19 shooting modes include Manual mode for full creative control and 9 Special Scene modes for tricky lighting conditions. My Colors allows colour effects to be applied to images and movies.
High quality movies
Shoot extra longı 30fps VGA quality movies with full audio, or record QVGA movies at 60fps and analyze in sharp slow motion.
Great indoor and night shots
A high-speed ISO 800 setting allows you to shoot correctly exposed images in low light conditions without using a flash. ISO 800 also enables shooting at higher shutter speeds, reducing the risk of image blur.
Widescreen recording
Shoot still images in Widescreen 16:9 mode for seamless playback on widescreen TV or printing on wide size paper to a SELPHY CP printer - perfect for viewing panoramas in all their glory.
Large 2.5" LCD screen
The large, bright 2.5" LCD features a wide viewing angle for easy group viewing. Night Display mode aids visibility in low light while a selectable Grid Line Display helps with composition.
Accessories
A complete range of optional accessories includes wide and tele converter lenses, a close-up lens and a slave flash.
Direct printing
Connect to any PictBridge or Canon Direct Print compatible photo printer and push the Print/Share button for instant photolab quality prints.
CANON iMAGE GATEWAY
CANON iMAGE GATEWAY² provides 100MB of web space for your own online photo gallery. A comprehensive software suite is included for browsing, editing, downloading and organising photos, movies and slide shows.

Strengths:
Great point and shoot, no extras lens to worry about, easy to work
Weaknesses:
not so hot on evening shots on its own, but can purchase extras
I upgraded from a Canon Powershot A540. This is a fantastic little camera, just point it and shoot and even better, learn some of the extras, I love this camera as I don't have to worry about other lens if I don't want to. I carry it everwhere, it never leaves my side and I have been so grateful so many times to have it with me. I love it and highly recommend it

This review actually refers to the A710 IS that has replaced the A700. It features the same 6x optical zoom but now has image stabilisation added to the package. This means that your shots are much clearer, especially at high zooms (the zoom is equivalent to a 35-210mm lens on an SLR), than they would be with a normal hand-held set-up. The capacity has also been upped to 7.1 Mega pixels, with the IS making each pixel even more usable than normal. The camera is very easy to use straight out of the box and comes with download software that is equally simple. I bought mine in America, but Amazon have it on sale at £189 which is remarkable value for something this good. The extra large screen makes framing shots a doddle and the overall size means it fits into a pocket quite comfortably. You will have to buy an additional memory card though, as the supplied one only holds about 20 shots, but this is not unique! Overall, if you have never bought a digital camera before and want a simple but highly effective choice, this is it!
