Description:
A lavish photographic guide to the birds of Britain and Europe
This definitive guide uses the highest quality close-up photography to bring over 500 species vividly to life on the page, capturing the individual beauty and detail of every bird. Its generous format, crystal-clear pictures and comprehensive introduction makes it the ultimate, information-packed ornithological reference.
It is the only guide to use a fully integrated photographic approach to present a stunningly vivid portrait of the birds of the Western Palearctic. The book opens with a lavishly illustrated introduction that offers an enlightening portrait of birds and their habitats. Covering evolution, anatomy and behaviour, it also describes how birds have adapted to different environments - from wetlands and rocky coasts to woodland and urban gardens - setting the scene for the comprehensive species catalogue that follows.
The 320 species most commonly seen in Britain and Europe enjoy full-page coverage, comprising a large, crystal-clear photograph of each bird in its most frequently observed plumage, with supporting images showing the most important plumage variations: adult/juvenile, male/female and winter/summer. Superb illustrations accompany the photographic portraits, revealing the characteristic appearance of each bird in flight, while in situ views portray a range of behaviours and habitats. Similar-looking species and subspecies are also pictured, for comparison.

Strengths:
Great layout, nice for comparing similar species, interesting introductory section.
Weaknesses:
Not a field guide due to size and weight
A good supplementary book to a field identifcation guide. Structured in the standard way in terms of groups of birds throughout the book. One page per species, showing the standard pictures, ranges and other information. A useful 'similar species' section for species that closely resemble each other. A book well worth having with a decent amount of information, nice photos and excellent presentation. Overall, a pleasant and useful book.
