Description

A long, slender bird with distinctive red legs and orange-red bill with black tip. The colouring of the adult birds can vary during the summer months depending on their habitat, with those in the northern regions having a darker grey brown plumage to their upper parts and speckled breast than birds in the south. During flight the adults have a distinctive white inverted V-shape to their rump and pale broad trailing edges to their wings.

Diet

Insects, marine molluscs and crustaceans, together with land molluscs and earthworms.
