The only native UK representative of the "mygalamorph" or tarantula group. Therefore it has distinctive downward hinging jaws that move up and down like pick axes, rather than side to side like the rest of the native spider fauna.
This spider is found mainly in southern England, but has been found in Scotland and Wales
Inhabits rough grassland and heathland on sandy or chalky soils.
This widespread, but very local, species is not not listed under any conservation designations, however the national recording scheme has a watching brief on this species as it appears to have declined significantly.
