Description: 

A medium to large Rusula, purplish red in the cap found growing in scattered groups or solitary in comiferous woodland, specifically with Pine.

Distribution: 

Locally frequent from Summer till Autumn.

Habitat: 

Grows in coniferous woodland specifically with Pine.

Cap: 

Initially convex, then flattened and depressed with age, purplish to brownish-red with ochraceous ot greenish tinges, slightly tacky when moist, smooth, the cuticle peeling marginally.

Flesh: 

Cap flesh is whitethen pallid straw, brittle and granular, stem flesh colour as in cap, brittle and full. Odour slightly fruity, taste very hot.

Gills: 

Adnexed, decurrent, forked, brittle, initially primrose in colour then a pale golden-yellow, narrow and occasionally weeping.

Stem: 

More or less clavate, smooth, white, flushed lilac or greyish-rose, ring absent.
