In summer, the male has mostly black upperparts and white underparts, a white-edged tail and a large patch on the wings. There is a small white patch above the bill on the forehead. In winter both male and female are similar but the male still has a white forehead. Both sexes have black bills and legs. The feamale is brown and off white, lacking the white forehead patch.
