This is the brown form of the Elephant Hawkmoth. Found feeding in the pond at work on Bogbean (Menyanthes trifoliata). How do they get out of the pond to pupate? The books suggest they can swim. I'd like to see it!

I deposited one of these on a neighbour's honeysuckle last year (I believe it's a favoured food) and hope it survived OK - the caterpillar, that is!!

Whoo, another memory maker! When I were a lass, I often used to explore the drain bank near where I lived in the middle of Hull. One day, I came across a monster like this on willowherb and remember running back home, all of a dither, to tell my dad (he was really into nature and taught me lots). I was convinced it was some new type of snake (well, I was only 7 at the time!). To cut a long story short, as there were several of them, we took one home and successfully raised it in the 'caterpillar box'. After remarking on how pretty the newly hatched moth was, we released it back on to the bankside.
