Thank you Ian, and yes it was keeping a very close watch on its food, only darting off if I got too close but returning as soon as it felt safe again.

That is an interesting fact Pauline and one I was not aware of, I thought like other spiders they waited in ambush just out of sight until an unsuspecting bug or insect dropped into the parlour.

Another interesting fact about the web is that hidden in the centre is the egg sac containing all the developing young.



The females remains with the young until they are ready to leave the labyrinth. Sometimes she dies before they leave, and in this case the young will eat their mother.
