Dora the Peregrine was a downright naughty girl ....... she flew once round the field at a stunning speed, landed on the tallest of the perches, then (I think) in a fit of pique cos her favourite kite (large man-made flying variety in brilliant pink - not the bird Red Kite!) could not be got into the air as the day was windless, blue and calm - so her second flight was down the field, left swerve into the trees and disappear ....... she was tracked and located a little later sat atop a lamp standard a quarter of a mile away ........ you little tinker Dora!' ......

A superb capture Pauline.
I just hope it 'put the brakes on' before it smashed into your big lens. Otherwise it would not only be superb capture but a very costly one.
Keep up the good work!

Another absolute gem Pauline. What with capturing the split second of the birds "pose" (If you can describe a Peregrine in flight as posing???), and your composition of the image - and how you managed to get such crisp focus I'll never know. - Brilliant.
Regards, Mike.

A tremendous shot Pauline. I have had a look on your website and there is a shot of a Tawny Owl just as awesome.Ok so they are not "wild" birds, big deal, they are still stunning shots perfectly executed, well done.

Right thank you guys but I must set the record straight - I can't have you all thinking I'm that clever when I'm not ..... she was about 3 inchs off her perch trying to take off vertically when I took this - so basically she's wing flapping and not going anywhere ......... I love the idea that you think I'm capable of taking a peregrine flying towards me but I'm not and if at any time before I die I get such a shot - you'll be the first to hear me shouting about it - promise!!
PS As I put this up I see Martin has left a comment re the tawny owl - now she was flying towards me - it was the only flight shot I got out of hundreds of attempts ........

No matter how the shot was engineered Pauline anyone can see that this is a first class image. You have still got to have a great degree of expertise to capture a stunning shot like this.

Thanks - you're a lovely set of guys you know ........ btw 'Dora' I've heard this aft is still awol ......... she's wearing a transmitter so should be recovered eventually ....... unless she's set off for somewhere really wild ....... she must have been really teed off that her 'kite trick' didn't happen cos there was no wind (a manmade one not a red kite - tho its was a brilliant shade of pink!) ...... there's nothing like a disappointed women for getting a fit of the sulks (even in the bird world) !!!!!

An absolute belter of an image! Perfect eye contact, perfect focus on the eye, great composition... They really don't come better than this! (Although I'm off to hunt down your tawny owl shot now, just in case! )

Thanks guys and gals: afraid 'Dora' is still awol tho and the centre have tracked her as far as Southport today! They assure me that she is very capable of taking care of herself - the last time it took 4 days apparently too tracke her down and when found she was tucking into a fresh crow!!!

I've got my giddy head on this morning (fast approaching hols maybe the cause!) but I am tempted to make a joke while saying thanks Jeapesy (and you know how much I admire and lust after your view shots esp that last one) so I don't think I will offend - oh stop blabbing Pauline and just say it ....... 'No it wasn't nailed down - teathered slightly - but not nailed' Hahahahaha!!! ok coat on - I'm going!!!!!!

Thanks daffy 66 and thanks again to everyone else ......... it was the sort of shot I hoped I was going to get - it was bubbling in the back of my mind before I went - of course I hoped I would achieve it in free flight - but even if Dora had behaved herself I wouldn't have got it - the speed she set off round the field was worth watching alone. Watching them soring around nests sites has got nothing in common with a bird in hunting mode. For anyone in the north west I can't think of a better place than Turbury Woods .......
