This shot shows the jumping device, called a furcula,which is the forked device you can see. It is normally folded underneath the body and held in place by the tenaculum. To leap, the Springtail releases the furcula and can travel up to 20 times its body length.
This is one of the larger ones in our Garden, all of 3mm long. |
