I've been passing these statues/carvings for a number of years now when coming on or off the M6 at the Longridge turn and vowed to photograph them ....... finally I stopped the car, got out and did just that! I love the smallest one nearest to - he would look lovely in my garden!!!

""I did not realise there were men by the M6""

They are the petrified remains of McAlpines Fusiliers who knocked off for a tea-break when the motorway was coned off & never returned..........

LOL I thought they might cause some jokes and laughter! Love it - esp gimley Chistina - I can see where you get that from - shouldn't the stone be 'bigger'?! Ian says I should have put a camera fround the neck of each one Tormentil! Linda - they are actually just off the motorway onto the A road (the roundabout is directly behind me) and a nearby roundabout has some more on but its getting overgrown and they don't look so good as these - I just love that little guy in front (no not Ian - well yes I do but - oh you know what I mean!) ..........

What is the history of these carvings? How long have they been there and who carved them?

Apart from the fact that they are carved out of old gateposts - so the stone posts could be quite old - I would think they are quite 'recent' and carved esp for the area - maybe as recent as that particular junction which has been opened up comparatively recently. You probably know that the area around Longridge and Ribchester nearby in particular has big associations with Roman occupation. I will Google a combination of words and see if any info comes up ....

A casual look has found someone saying they are Viking men carved out of old stone gateposts and may be linked to a Norse settlement at Brockhole - so not Roman men at all it seems - you;ve started something now Purple'smum!
