Thanks Rob - but I gotta ask - how do you know its a male? Tens min later I think I've answered my own question - cos only the males are out at this time of year would that be it??

Thanks Jeapesy and Wayne - maybe I'm stupid - after all they are individuals like us and I could have woken up a grumpy feisty one - but I just didn't think it would actually bite - plus it was within a yard of the boardwalk with sev folks going past - so not a nervous beast!

Great shot Pauline,I have seen one so far but it was slithering away from me on the wrong side of a fence,so couldnt get a photo!

Fantastic shot, but be careful they can put some people in hospital
I have taken a shot of an adder but with a 300mm lens so well done and very brave.

Thanks Ellen, windy and tony D - nothing brave about it - sheer stupidity - but worth the risk! I knew the 100-400 shots would not be sharp cos I was shaking so much (excitement not fear!) which is why I laid down in the bog with the macro and slithered in - thats when he decided to slither out!
