From a saline pool.

What wonders from the deep!

Shot not good but first on WAB and one not many get the chance to see. Water very murky.

Not very big. About 1.5 cm including the antennae. I have been reading up on their importance as a food source to estuary birds.

Like something out of Dr Who aren't they!

I read the same articles when trying to find out more about them after veiwing your photo. I couldn't find much info on the creature itself. Do you know what it would be classed as?

I can indeed. It's from the order Amphipoda. A small Crustacean.

They live in vertical burrows in the mud.

These are the most numerous invert in Morecambe Bay estimated to be up to one million per square metre. They live in small but relatively deep burrows in the sub littoral zone. As the tide ebbs off spidery tracks to and from the burrow entrance can be seen. They regularly cast their exoskeleton and millions can be found washed up in great broad belts of flotsam. Waders and flounders are the main consumer of this important food supply.

I've just seen you image W-W and cannot resist commenting! Something so apparently insignificant with a major place in the scheme of things.
