Have we got Wild Goats in this country or should this be in with the Foreign Nationals?

You get wild goats in Scotland anyway. My Dad always shows me where they live, if we're ever near to Inverness.

Hi Wolfhill

I'm afraid I expressed myself rather badly. What I meant was are the Goats indigenous or introduced. If the former then they can be in the Mammals section otherwise they will need to be included with the Foreign Nationals. I am not sure where to place them at present.

All 'wild' goats within the uk are decended from escapees and released animals. Although it is often stated that many of them are decended from roman times, the earliest reliable documented evidence dates back to the fourteenth century - which of course doesn't mean they weren't present earlier. There is also a lot of documented evidence that most of the current populations are descended from releases/escapes around the turn of the century.

So at best I think you could probably group them with say grey squirrels in that they can be classed as naturalised species. They certainly are not indigenous species.

Hope this helps,

Alan

Thank you Alan. It is always good to have extra information about non-indigenous species.

Not sure why I've been listed as a guest with the my previous reply, maybe my web link timed out!

Thanks for the comment Boddie! If you have a head for heights just come up to Scotland and visit the Grey Mares Tail in Dumfries and you will be guaranteed to see them in the wild.
