This week I've treated myself to a new lens - a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM - a very sharp and ultra-fast lens in order to take full advantage of the close range flight shot opportunities at our local Kingfisher nest site. Here's just 3 shots from my visit to the site yesterday morning. This one shows the bird having just emerged from the nesthole and coming out of a 'cleansing dip'.

Cracking set of shots Jeff - I love this one in particular. A worthwhile investment I'd say - you must be very pleased with your new bit of kit!

I love the reflection in the water on this one.

That's one super fine lens you've got there Jeff. It should work very well with a 1.4x TC to give more magnification if needed.

I wish your shots had the EXIF info on though, I'd have liked to see what shutter speed these were taken at.

Thanks Linda, Thea and Graham and yes, I'm quite pleased with the new lens. However, these shots were taken very early yesterday morning in very overcast conditions which rather limited the lens's potential.

In fact Graham you may be surprised to know that this shot was taken at only 1/400th and the other flight shot at 1/500th - both at f/2.8; ISO 1250 and 200mm focal length. With better light conditions I hope to exploit the speed of what I know is a fine lens by using faster shutter speeds and lower ISOs.

And yes Graham, one of the considerations taken into account in deciding to buy this lens is its performance with my 1.4x TC.
