That is a beauty, just a tiny tad more DOF and I would give pretty well full marks

Thanks for your comments.
Jon, your right. I should have upped the ISO. I've already proved to myself that the 40D is excellent at ISO 1000. That would have allowed me to shoot at F10 of F11.

that's a beauty Graham. I gather you're now using the 40D then - how are you finding it?

I'm finding it's very good Matt. It's fast, the high speed continuous mode is extremely fast and deep. Shooting JPEGS it never seems to slow down at all.
What I really like is the ISO changes. You can see the settings in the viewfinder, and make changes without moving your eye away from the camera. Very nice. I also like the better ISO range. I rate the images as very low noise. The ISO 1250 to me so far looks more like my old ISO 800.
I've only used it for two days but I've already taken over 1,500 shots. I think it's a very worthwhile upgrade from the 20D.
I've done a more detailed review on it in the review section.

thanks Graham, I've just read your review as well.
It sounds like a very nice camera. I've heard conflicting claims about noise levels compared to the 20D/30D. The following site claims the 40D is noiser but you and others have claimed the reverse. I wonder if it depends on whether you're shooting RAW or JPEG? The NR in the latter could be making the difference, but maybe the actual RAW files are not much different?

Having the ISO in the viewfinder sounds like a very good idea

Very interesting.
All my shots so far have been JPEG, with the camera set to Neutral. There must be some very clever noise reduction going on as the images I've got are definitely lower in noise than my 20D examples, and look more detailed.
This one for example:

ISO 1000. Noise reduction done, but even without it looks better than a typical ISO 800 from my 20D.
I intend to shoot some RAW shots this week, it'll be interesting to see how they compare.

that shot looks as clean as a whistle. I'll be interested to hear how you get on with shooting RAW files.
