They are locally very common. ie when you see one tree covered in them but all the other trees around it may not have any. As with marble galls and knopper galls they have two generations per year, one of which can be found on sessile or pedunculate oak but the other, sexual generation usually requires the presence of a turkey oak. If there are no turkey oaks in the area then the chances of having thses galls is slight.
