Dipper - Cinclus cinclus

One of the non-Kingfisher related highlights of my wildlife/photography year was spending a day on a one-to-one workshop with young professional wildlife photographer Ben Hall. Ben is one of the rising stars of UK wildlife photography with many 'Birds' and other magazine covers and awards to his name. He also had a very successful and long-running exhibition of his work at Manchester Museum earlier this year - check out his website for some examples of his work. In addition to that he's a very amenable young man and I thoroughly enjoyed my day with him photographing Dippers in the Peak District. Here's some of my results.

Thought I recognised the spot! Well done Jeff - nice series. Ben was there last year when we went and had someone in tow that day - the dippers are very forgiving and perform beautifully and the narrowness of the river valley keeps them more or less in reach of the camera!!

nice dipper shots Jeff, were these taken anywhere near Lathkill Dale? I've heard there are dippers around there and keep meaning to visit.

Thanks Pauline & Matt. We spent the morning in Bradford Dale (where most of my best shots were taken) and the afternoon in Lathkill Dale. Lathkill is one of the busier dales and the level of disturbance from passers-by much greater. Ben's enormous lens also attracted lots of attention and we had many walkers stopping for a chat! There was also rather a lot of water coming down the valley on the day we were there and the sheer volume of water in many of the waterfalls was simply too much for the Dippers. On reflection, I preferred Bradford Dale - much quieter but, as Pauline says, with the birds being very obliging and coming into very close range even without the use of hides. The only problem was that a couple of the locals clearly weren't very friendly towards bird photographers - understandable to some extent given that some idiot had apparently disturbed a nesting pair earlier in the year by actually trying to remove rocks from around its nest!!!!
