And this is the very hairy flightless female of the species: we surmised that she must hatch from an egg on this post, be mated on this post, lay her eggs on or near this post and then die. . .

And I forgot to mention - when I got home and downloaded I see I had 'got two for one' as the lichen to the right is Rinodina roboris!

Is that really a moth? I've never seen one like that and where are the wings? I know another stupid question by goosey - but I'm learning alll the time! Lovely photo by the way!

Yes it really is a moth! A few species - this one included have flightless females! The book says: it is resident and rated as Nationally Scarce A with one of the subspecies meriting Red Data Book status! I first found the caterpiller back in 1990 while camping on the Isle of Barra, Outer Hebrides: its taken me until this Easter 2007 to catch up with the adults and I must say I'm made up!!
