Hi Black...not being into crustacean I gather that this is a live one, the froth at the front would indicate this. Does it filter food like a fiddler crab?

Must say a great shot and most interesting never seen one like that around the Thames Estuary.

Hi Martin,

no this is sadly a corpse. To find a live one you'd have to dig down. The Masked Crab burrows backwards into the sand and feeds on the infaunal invertebrates. The antennae are usually really stout and are used to maintain a respiratory tube to the surface to allow oxygenated water to reach the crab.
