Hi Barbara, nice shot the Bearded Tits. I was wondering what a grit station is? and why Bearded Tits come to them?

Hi Fergus
Thankyou for your comment. There are only 400 hundred pairs of Bearded Tits in the UK. I think there are around 50 pairs at Leighton Moss but I could well be wrong on that one. They live in reedbeds but sometimes they may move away from the breeding area in the winter. In the summer they eat insects, insect larvae, spiders and seed but at this time of the year they mainly eat seed. The RSPB at Leighton Moss where I took this pic, put out grit at feeding stations so that the Bearded Tits can grind the seed down in their crop, just like we would give a budgie grit. We only saw one pair while we were there, the weather was slight drizzle which didn't help as they are mainly seen in the better weather. The grit station was quite far away and the tits only looked very very small to the naked eye, this is the best I could do with my bigma I'm afraid.

Well done Barbara, I am very envious of this one. there are a couple of places near me where I can see them if I am lucky, but never been able to get a photograph.

Thanks Roger, I wished it had been a lot sharper but as I said to Fergus the grit station was quite far away. I was very pleased that we saw them though because we went to Leighton Moss with the intention of seeing them. We didn't see much of the reserve due to the weather but we hope to return soon in better weather because it is a lovely place with still a lot to explore

they're lovely looking birds aren't they. Well done Barbara, certainly a bird I've never had the pleasure of seeing.

Thankyou Jon and Beryl, I'll have to pick a finer day before I try to capture them again and read my instruction book for my camera
