I think it is some sort of Orchid the flower head was approx 25mm across and it looked like there was more buds below the top one.

This is a species of Montbretia (Crocosmia). Native to South Africa, about four species are established in Britain the commonest being Montbretia (Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora). It is a member of the Iris family.
