It was about the size of Syrphus ribesii and very active, have got it on video, which even caught the buzzing sound it made. Caught it at a bad angle for a proper id.

Acutally is not a bad angle. You're only missing the wing pattern and legs, but the abdominal pattern and shape sort of suggest E.tenax to me. The close together eyes suggest a male as well
