This image was taken in the afternoon at Stockhill Woods in Somerset on the 21st July 2012.

Actually I went out to hopefully photograph some reptiles, looked like the perfect day for it, not too hot and a little light cloud, but instead I was persistently bothered by the these flies and not a reptile in sight, so I turned my attention to this little fly instead.

First dozen or so attempts were a bit of a joke but finally managed to get a decent image. Taken in natural light and a single shot only at f7.1 around 3 times mag.

How many times did you get bitten? Great shot - hope it was worth it!

Thanks guys! I actually managed to avoid being bitten on this occasion, it was fairly cool when I took this so they do not move as fast, since this hot weather though, I've not been so lucky and they are becoming a bit of a nuisance!!

Excellent detail Heath, well done mate. Bit to close for comfort for me though.
