This is a memorial sculpture for the many merchant seamen from Cardiff, Penarth and Barry that died caught up in armed conflict. viewed from one side it is at once a bold face shaped out of metal and from the other side the hollow hull of a ship on it's side meant to replicate the ghostly wreck on the sea floor. This trick of seeing the same object in two completely different ways (a sort of optical illusion) was used by Dali amongst others in a number of his works..The sense of changing perspective invites us to look more closely at the object to work out its true meaning. This is really impressive when seen up close (even though i am not a huge fan of sculpture myself)

I was expecting a daytime shot. But the evening shot works really well and gives the sculpture some life. Super shot.

Thank you Richard, I did take a few in the daytime but i did prefer the effect the low light gave it.. Like i said I am not a huge fan of modern sculpture but this is quite clever when you see it in the flesh (so to speak) I didn't manage to get a good enough shot of the other side of it to show the other perspective.. I will have to go back and try on a quiet morning when there are fewer people around it!

What a great piece of art, very clever and a poignant reminder of those who gave their lives whilst on the seas. Nice image sweedie.

Thank you Woodman..And especially "like you say" what it stands for!
I really must find time to pop back and get a shot of the other side, it will make sense of my description (optical illusion) if you see this.
To be continued..

I've looked at that several times now and think it's fantastic. Looking forward to the other side!
