5th April 2012, the pillar is said to have been erected at the behest of Lady Anne Clifford, to commemorate Sir Hugh de Morville, once Lord of the manor of Mallerstang. Sir Hugh was one of the knights who 'dealt with' Archbishop Thomas Beckett.
