East of the mouth of the River Rhymney the coast in Cardiff consists of a Sea Wall protecting a flat area of land known as the Wentloog Levels. The levels are a man-made area of reclaimed land taken from the sea many centuries ago. It is drained by a network of reens that are now valuable for wildlife. Because of this, the whole area is a massive Site of Special Scientific Interest.
A Sea Wall has been constructed along the coast to stop the sea reclaiming back the land. Walking by the Sea Wall and the foreshore is often quiet as it is not known to tourists and has no carparks specific to the site but you are rewarded with open views across the estuary. Low tide reveals vast mudflats and areas of salt marsh. |
