The warm background is a mature pine tree bole out of focus: we worked on these whilst being bitten out of existence - I could be heard swearing and blaspheming half a mile away at least - esp when my macro - which has been going wrong for a spell finally gave up focusing .... Not NOW!

Now then now then, then now..............lovely. This stands out a mile, great colours, the contrast between the body and the background, couldn't ask for more, even with a dickie macro lens, you've got a shot and half, well done Pauline

I've been stood next to her when she kicks off Lee - I've learned a few choice phrases I can tell you!

Worth all the swearing and swatting though Pauline, it's a real gem!

I can imagine the scene! - Pauline:- "Heaven forfend, those darling little midges are causing something of a minor distraction. - Oh, how unfortunate, now the macro lens appears to have become unserviceable" (Or words to that effect! ).

Seriously though, this is a cracker! The colour rendition is so vivid it jumps right out at you!!

Regards, Mike.

A superb shot Pauline, great colours and background, I didn't even know there was a Northern Damselfly, you have my sympathy for the blaspheming, I've been bitten so much over the last few weeks and its the really small ones that gather in swarms that are the worst!

Thanks folks: I did wonder about dumbing that background down as it looks so false like we had taken a coloured board!

A superb shot - nothing at all wrong with the background.

I know all about the problems with biting insects as well, the worst was when I was in a forest bog in Finland, being eaten alive by mosquitos which I couldn't swat without the movement scaring the damselflies I was focussing on a few inches in front of me!

Oops, somehow managed to get a double post through!

I'll add that I'm surprised that you weren't using manual focussing for macro - surely it was only auto focus that packed up?
