Cenarth is litfle community straddling the river Teifi between Cardigan and Newcastle Emlyn.
The falls (slightly up from the bridge) are notable as the first significant barrier on the River Teifi that salmon and migratory seatrout encounter on their return to their home river as they make their way upstream to spawn. The dominant feature of the village is the bridge. Built in 1787 and designed by William Edwards and his son David, the bridge features a series of circular holes that serve to maintain strength while reducing the weight of the structure. Edwards devised this architectural solution after his original bridge at Pontypridd collapsed as its footing could not support the weight of the bridge. He rebuilt the bridge at Pontypridd with his trademark circular holes where it still stands today. When it was built, the bridge at Pontypridd was the longest single span bridge in the world. |
