This is a "one hundred per cent" Goshawk. The eye stripe and barring on the chest and colouration. You have to be one of the luckiest guys around to have one of these in your back garden. Check out the picture and description in the RSPB Bird book.

It looks like a female Sparrowhawk to me. The legs are too needle-like to be Goshawk and the eyes are yellow. The size too appears to be too small for a Goshawk which is the size of a Buzzard. In relation to the size of the fence this looks to be a much smaller bird. Sorry to burst your bubble Stuart but that's my opinion. Nicola.

Have just noticed this. Female Sparrowhawk. It totally lacks the bulk of Goshawk and there are a few other plumage features that do not fit.

the yellow eye is the defining feature of a fem.sparrowhawk. still a nice thing to see.

it is a female sparrowhawk ...i have worked with birds of prey for many years ..a goshawk is more butch and features are different
