After the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, plans were drawn up to provide a comprehensive chain of defences around Pembroke Dock. This is the NE Martellow Tower off Pembroke Dock that is part of Milford Haven defences and was completed in May 1851.

The tower is three stories in height with a basement for containing stores, a magazine for 198 barrels of powder and water tank for 12,500 gallons of water. The ground floor (or upper floor) contains the main internal gun battery for nine howitzers, divided into two rooms for the seventeen man garrison. On the roof are the three gun positions for the 32pdrs on traversing gun carriages firing en barbette whilst at the top of the spiral staircase is a covered loopholed musketery gallery protecting the entrance

After doing this bit of research and taking this photo it is on my list to visit once open in the season as it is now a museum.

Another good image, but with a great deal of education for me. I never knew the Martellow Towers went all that far round the coast. I was just under the impression that it was round the South East Coast... Great Yarmouth way down to Poole... but hey !! ships can sail a darn long way. Will now be told of Towers all over the Country.

But nice to see it is a Museum, keeps safe the past History of such amazing Engineering and outstandingly desperate measures to keep this Country safe.

A lot round our side of the Coast have been turned into homes.... a good thing too, stops them from falling into ruins and the structure lost forever.

Back to the image... works well in B/W keeps the focus where it is needed, but gives a great depth to the shot and the walkway with great contrasting shadows... good one.

Hey thanks Martin for your kind comments.

As for the name Martello, I'm thinking it is more that the locals use it, as they resemble the 'real' Martello Towers on the south coast. On an OS map though they are down as Martello Towers but like I say, I think they're just Gun Towers really. But.......it is made of Portland stone!

Also there is another one (photo might come later) that is in the Dock and like you have already mentioned this is in the process of being converted into living accommodation, what a great place to live, as long as you don't enjoy gardening

Cheers mate
