We know because we counted 'em in this photo of the same fish: .
Poor Neil is still kicking himself because he assumed it was a three-spined and ignored it. We only discovered the truth after we'd returned it to the marsh, packed everything away, and were sat flicking through our images over a cup of tea in the visitor centre.

I looked at the image of the whole fish after the head shot! A nice find. I don't know those Marshes or area at all. Was the fish found in brackish water?

I'm not entirely sure, John. The place we caught him is no more than 100 metres from the Thames estuary so I'd be surprised if there wasn't at least a trace of salt in the water. Jules should know - I'll ask in the thread - http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/fo...ng-photos.html
