The dessicated head of a Wels catfish showing the impressive dentition. Multiple ranks of inward pointing sharp teeth across the width of the jaws reduce the chance of prey escaping.

This species has been introduced to fisheries in the UK.

Having never seen a Wels in the flesh, I found this dried head and was fascinated by the dentition. It wasn't a big fish, the gap between upper and lower jaw was big enough to push my forefinger into quite easily but withdrawing it was a different matter. I recall the video of the catfish swimming along the surface with a ball stuck in it's mouth. I can now see why the ball was stuck - it would have never come out.

The mouth of a 60lb fish would be quite formidable.
