Found on a windy and rain-swept foray in the Lancashire Pennines.

Microscopy (almost spherical, smooth spores, 4-6microns, with droplets, pale yellowish-brown under transmitted light) seems to support my ID, but it’s not one I’ve seen before, and according to literature, is quite variable in colour.

Thank you Lancashire Lad - I saw this in North Yorkshire in June and didn't know what it was. Very nice image.

Thanks for your comments Mark & Joan, much appreciated.

I have to confess that I'm not 100% certain on the ID on this one, as the colour appeared to be rather orangy when compared with other photos I've seen - but the microscopy kept leading me back to this as the best contender. And, as far as macro features go, various literature says C.laeticolor is sinuous-slightly wavy, often longitudinally grooved, has pallid whitish tips, and can range in colour from pale yellow - through orange yellow, (and occasionally apricot or peach). So it seems to be the most likely.

Regards, Mike.

They look like tongues of fire! I remember KB telling me it was difficult to seperate this species even with mircroscopy .... which leads me back to the idea that the differences are arbitrarily human based rather than real?!
