Pale Clouded Yellow

Scientific Name:
Colias hyale
Wingspan (mm):
Male 52-56mm, female 52-62mm

Description

It is only the male of this species which is a true pale yellow. The female is white with black margins and two yellow spots on each hind-wing. Both male and female of this species have white spots contained within the black border of the fore-wings. Pale clouded yellows are rare, and not seen every year as they are migrants from the continent. Some early arrivals lay eggs, but the damp winter kills the caterpillars.

Distribution

Mostly in southern England and southern Ireland.
