Miscellaneous Water Life Facts

Starfish

Around the coasts of Great Britain there are 7 species of starfish.

Starfish may have as few as 5 arms, or as many as 13, depending on the species.

Starfish use suction discs found on the underside of the starfish arms to prize apart bivalve molluscs such as mussels or oysters, to obtain food.

At one time starfish were collected, then torn in two by those who sought an income from the sale of mussels or oysters. However, starfish have the capacity to regenerate limbs and their central disc, from as little as one-fifth of it's original size.

Starfish have an 'elastic' mouth through which the stomach extrudes into it's prey for digestion.

Jellyfish

Jellyfish are made up almost entirely of water (about 95%) and have no heart, lungs, skeleton or brain.
